Flexibility and Emotional Intelligence

Many organisations promote that they offer flexible services, flexible working hours or even flexible solutions to your problems. But what does this notion of flexibility mean? To be flexible infers an openness, an openness to change and being able to adapt quickly. There is a strong connection to speed in that you must be able to shift direction or thought quickly to be able to provide a solution. Whilst flexibility has become a selling point it has not become a reality. To be truly flexible it means you need to be able to shift pace, thought or direction instantly. To be able to do this means you need to be highly emotionally intelligent and free of personal attachments.

To do this requires looking at a situation and being able to resolve what is required and then to create a solution and a plan to go forward. This requires the perspective of seeing all changes in life as new exciting opportunities for creative thought. This requires you to be very calm, relaxed and not stressed. Everyone has different solutions to how to achieve these states of mind. Most often mediation is a key one, along with exercise, and taking time out to fulfil your personal needs. It’s about being self aware and noticing what you may be needing to achieve this state of mind.

So now lets imagine a workplace offering ‘flexibility’ as an attribute. This requires making sure staff are calm, relaxed and not stressed. However what we often observe when the need for flexibility is required are highly stressed people as they try to change what is required. So I wonder if a CEO sees that offering flexibility requires them to be responsible for creating a workplace that provides meditation classes, exercise rooms or other services? If you offer flexibility ensure you offer the whole package not just trendy concepts with no meaning.
